Real Estate - It's Real

| Kerri
I carved our names into
A tree
I walked on decomposing
Leaves
I skated on the frozen
Sea
It's real as far as I
Can see

Wrapping up this week with a pleasantly chill tune from Brooklyn's Real Estate. Head's up, Portlandia: they're playing with the fun punk girl band Potty Mouth at the Crystal Ballroom on Friday. (We got to see Potty Mouth open up for Beach Slang a few months back.)

Courtney Barnett - Pedestrian At Best

| Keith
Put me on a pedestal and I'll only disappoint you
Tell me I'm exceptional, I promise to exploit you
Give me all your money, and I'll make some origami, honey
I think you're a joke, but I don't find you very funny

It was only a matter of time before Courtney Barnett's work was featured as a Most Important Song. Her lyrics, in a word (ok, two) are the best. And, that guitar? Classic. She's Austrailian and I've spent quite a bit of time in Oz lately, so I guess I felt this was the right time. I head home from Sydney to Austin today and as much as I love it down here, I'm so happy to be going home.

Keep it cool down here Courtney, I hope to be back before too long and I'm pretty sure I'll see you in Austin in November. :)

Slingshot Dakota - Wave

| Keith

There is a wave
And it’s 40 feet tall
And we watch it crash together

I’ve been dreaming the strangest dreams
I guess it’s all these changes

And we watch it crash together

I've made an executive decision that we're going round out the week with some more lo-fi rock. This time from Slingshot Dakota, who remind me a bit of Matt & Kim and Diet Cig. I guess if you mix keyboards and drums you get a similar sound. In this case, it's layered with a subtle sophistication and some really killer instrumentalisation.

Like what you hear? Check this out, it's awesome:

Waxahatchee - Under A Rock

| Keith
Maybe you got your head caught in a ditch last night
I got to you, imparting
Now you're someone else's mess tonight

I've never been to Waxahatchee Creek, which is, yeah, you guessed it, a creek. In Alabama. Waxhatchee is also the work of Katie Crutchfield; well written and arranged vocal-heavy lo-fi/folk rock with a little something special that I can't quite put my finger on.

Honeyblood - Killer Bangs

| Keith
I don’t wanna have to go
Go on without you
But I have to.
When I go will there be anything
To come home, come home to?
I don’t wanna have to go,
Go go go on without you, without you.
I made this with you.

I discovered Scottish duo Honeyblood a few years back at SXSW and they've been on my radar and in my heavy rotation ever since. They've got a great sound that swings between upbeat rock and mellow melodic. When "Killer Bangs" came up the other night (off of one of my many random playlists, I've added them to a few) I thought about having to travel without Kerri and, well, I guess it's a bit cheesy, but about how we go on until it's time to come home and making something with someone special.

If you like this, you might check out their newest, "Ready For The Magic", a hard-driving pop-punk joint.
