The Decemberists - Severed

| Keith

The Decemberists seem to get more and more 80's new wave every time I hear them. Their new song, "Severed", is a great example of what I'm talking about. Now, I don't follow them all that closely, so I might be wrong there, but in my not-at-all-expert opinion, it's a cool move they're making.

New Order - Round & Round

| Kerri
I just can't help thinking
What you've done to me
You built a wall of love and tore it right down
In front of me
And you think you know what's going on
You keep telling me that I am wrong
I don't care about what you do
'Cause if you mess with me I'll get rid of you

I enjoyed that Joy Division book so much that I immediately dove into reading the same author (Peter Hook, the bassist)'s book about his years in New Order. It's MUCH thicker, as you might imagine, and I'm not finished yet. I am at the bit where they first thought that New Order was finished, though - when Barney started Electronic so Hooky started Revenge, and everyone were super coke heads. Basically just after Technique, the album this track is from, in 1989.

Duran Duran - New Moon On Monday

| Kerri
Breaking away with the beast of both worlds
A smile that you can't disguise
Every minute I keep finding
Clues that you leave behind
Save me from these reminders
As if I'd forget tonight
This time La Luna
I light my torch and wave it for the
New moon on Monday
And a fire dance through the night
I stayed the cold day with a lonely satellite

Are you in the path of totality today?? If you don't know what I'm talking about, then you don't live in North America and haven't been non-stop inundated with the astronomical excitement (and warnings to make sure you are using NASA approved eyewear). I'm not in the perfect path, so I'll be watching the eclipse on TV, because I kind of suspect that will be cooler than just watching it get sort of dimmer outside ( and because I don't have the special glasses, womp). Whatever you're doing today, here's a tune that kind of goes with the Great American Eclipse theme. (Also, I love Duran Duran.) Bonus: Of course, the absolute on the nose perfect song, in it's awesome 80's glorious video form, for the viewing pleasure of those of us stuck inside. (Don't risk going blind, people!!)

Professor Murder - Dutch Hex

| Keith
Do they owe us a living?
Of course they do. Of course they do.
Do they owe us a living?
Of course they fucking do.

Almost a year ago we featured "Free Stress Test" by Professor Murder, a groovy throwback to the wild and wonderful club music of the 80's. They don't have a ton of music but I love almost everything heard from them so wanted to do another. This time we've got the remarkable "Dutch Hex".

RIYL: The Rapture, Alexander Robotnick, Telex, Cetu Javu, Psyche

The Horrors - Machine

| Keith
Your smile is nothing to live for
But read out your lines
And bring the fantasy to life
You taste like a ghost
A cold simulation
So close to the truth
A costume jewel, an off-white lie

Once upon a time, at SXSW, I saw a big haired goth-punk-industrial outfit called The Horrors and loved their crazy show. They've got two solid singles out now and an album coming soon. The first of these, "Machine", is today's Most Important, a sharp track with an industrial feel, and the second, "Something To Remember Me By" is a BONUS TRACK that's very pretty.

RIYL: Shout Out Louds, The Rapture, Depeche Mode, Klaxons
