Vök's set at Airwaves was really cool and reflected their sound well; a terrific blending of soulful vocals, synths and bright horns. They reminded me a lot of Poliça and had a similar style live show.
CeaseTone - Full Circle
Another Airwaves act I'm interested in is CeaseTone, a classical music influenced indie band who reminds me a whole lot of The Dear Hunter, mixing strings, electronic elements, and beautiful vocals to a very pleasant result.
RIYL: The Dear Hunter, City and Colour, Minus The Bear, Sin Fang
Upcoming Shows
Makthaverskan - Comfort
Continuing a theme of bands with really long names, today's Most Important is from Swedish rockers Makthaverskan. I've seen them described as dark indie pop and that's accurate, and I find them very much in the vein of some classic 4AD bands. Think Cocteau Twins. They've got a new album out, III, and it's fantastic.
RIYL: Lush, Cocteau Twins, Cranes, The Sundays
Upcoming Shows
Dreambeaches - Trademark
Listening to their sunny, beachy sound, you'd probably never guess that Dreambeaches are from chilly Buffalo New York. Here's a pleasant track from their most recent EP for your Sunday morning and afternoon pleasures.
RIYL: Rooney, Walter Etc., Nada Surf, Ben Kweller
Upcoming Shows
Nilüfer Yanya - Baby Luv
Baby luv, I tried but I cannot forgive
I'm crazy hot inside
So I'm leaving you with him
Sun-bleached and dusty white
No one sees it, so unfair
How you're still beautiful
I could watch you comb your hair
London's Nilüfer Yanya makes uncomplicated indie rock with a beautifully unique thread running through it. Her voice reminds me, just a little bit, of a Kate Bush, and that's saying something. She's got a couple of singles and EPs out now, and, assuming she keeps on keeping on with this, I reckon we'll be hearing lots more gems from her.
RIYL: Elder Island, Alison Crutchfield, Japanese Breakfast, Jay Som
