Alice Merton - No Roots

| Kerri

I like digging holes and, hiding things inside them
When I grow old, I hope I won't forget to find them
Cause, I've got memories and travel like gypsies in the night

I build a home and wait for, someone to tear it down
Then pack it up in boxes, head for the next town
Cause, I've got memories and travel like gypsies in the night

Continuing the week with another rocking female groove, I present to you Canadian/German/British Alice Merton (if you haven't already heard her a dozen times on your alt station). A sudden darling on my local station, I keep hearing bits of this track when I'm flipping the dial and finally tracked down who/what it was this morning. Hitting the ground running with a solid label (Mom + Pop) behind her, her first EP (which this song is part of but which is not on Spotify) came out in July and won an award in Germany already.

Cut Copy - Counting Down

| Kerri
Tell you all my fears
Losing loves and fading years
But I'm still sitting on my tears
They wouldn't go to waste

No matter what you do to turn it down
Know that I want you too to have the sound
All your clocks are slowly counting down
Love will save, love will save us

Whichever weekend of ACL we choose to attend, there's always a couple bands exclusive to the other we'll have to miss. Last year it was Wombats and Atlas Genius, this year it's Mutemath, Joseph, and Cut Copy. CC's new album, Haiku from Zero, just came out last week and it's goood so even though Keith posted an early release back in July, we're doing 'em again. I'm going to hang out on the rooftop of our building and see if I can hear their set...

RIYL: Chromeo, Miami Horror, YACHT, Toro y Moi

Midnight Faces - Devils Money

| Kerri
Only so many ways I can say
You always keep me from where I'm going
Only so many things I can change
Obvious difference is you're not going

I'm really excited about this Discover Weekly find. Midnight Faces remind me (musically) of The Cure but with a less screechy/effeminate vocalist (no offense to dear Robert Smith). Definite 80s post-punk synth pop-rock vibe. They have a very modern formation: collaborating over the internet from disparate cities in the east/midwest, until they moved to L.A. (and added a drummer). "Devils Money" is their latest single, but I'm also loving 2016's album Heavenly Bodies, especially the tracks "Blue Haze" and "Sirens"

RIYL: The Cure, Shout Out Louds, Funeral Advantage, Tape Waves, Bad Suns

Atlas Genius - 63 Days

| Kerri
Now I'm packing to leave you for 63 days
And you think I won't miss you in six million ways
And the time of your life, spent wondering why
I don't call when I promise to
Ooh, now darling

One of the more obvious band clichés "lyrics based on experience from first big tour" Atlas Genius still draw me in with their fresh, modern sound. I love that the first new release in two years from these Aussie boys has me just as excited about them as their first release ever. "63 Days" is an early single for their forthcoming third album. I hope to catch them at Antone's here in Austin later this month.

RIYL: Walk the Moon, A Silent Film, Paper Route, Royal Teeth

Grizzly Bear - Mourning Sound

| Kerri

I made a mistake
I should have never tried
I took the cake
Finished every slice
I moved away
Still playing off the fights
For every day
I share our love delight

I stare at the face
Looking through my eyes
I move at a pace
That I cannot survive
I'm hauling away
I do it all the time
Let love age
And watch it burn out and die

"Mourning Sound" was the first single from Painted Ruins the widely acclaimed new album by wonderfully atmospheric, sometimes psychedelic, Brooklyn indie quartet Grizzly Bear. This album is slightly less dreamy than previous recordings, but remains completely them. They've recently released the fourth single and another surreal video to go with (below).

RIYL: Foxygen, Deerhunter, Yeasayer, Fleet Foxes, Department of Eagles
