The Crookes - Roman Candle

| Kerri

Please don't live the same year eighty times
Lord knows that if you do you can't ever call that a life
It's true my darling, I love watching TV in your tiny room
But I swear there must be so much more
Stepping out your door

The days'll run away
So let's go up in flames

It's obscene, when I was seventeen I had no wisdom teeth
They say "just be yourself" like that's an easy thing to be
No you don't need a boyfriend now, oh honey pie, oh girl
I'll show you the world
Here's another photo staring back at me

Starting with such promise out of a suburb in central England, sounding something like a certain era of The Smiths and getting accolades and promotions constantly from NME to The Guardian to BBC2... I love their sound, and maybe especially this song off of last year's Lucky Ones, but the last news from the band is loss of another original member so hard to say if there'll be anything more. Maybe they're going out in flames?

RIYL: (happier versions of) The Smiths, The Cure, Belle & Sebastion, Gene

The Killers - The Man

| Kerri

I know the score like the back of my hand
Them other boys, I don't give a damn
They kiss on the ring, I carry the crown
Nothing can break, nothing can break me down
Don't need no advice, I got a plan
I know the direction, the lay of the land
I know the score like the back of my hand
Them other boys, I don't give a damn

I'm the man, come round
No-no-nothing can break, no-nothing can break me down
I'm the man, come round and
No-no-nothing can break, you can't break me down

Controversy here at TMIS: posting The Killers. If I'd have attempted to write up a classic Killers hit, such as the beloved "Mr. Brightside", I have no doubt that Keith would have deleted the post. (Bonus video: "Human" from 2008) There's few things (musical or otherwise) Keith's a hater of but Brandon's band gets that distinction. I, on the other hand, am a fan of the music despite having an issue personally with delusional Mr. Flowers. So anyway, this is the first new Killers song in forever and it's glam-rocky, Bowie-inspired, straight-forward-yet-tongue-in-cheek fun. I like it and I'm optimistic about the upcoming album, and about seeing The Killers perform at ACL in October. (Thankfully, at a festival literally a couple blocks from our door, Keith can either watch another performance or go home early.)

Manchester Orchestra - The Gold

| Keith
Couldn't really love you any more
You've become my ceiling
I don't think I love you anymore
That gold mine changed you
You don't have to hold me anymore
Our cave's collapsing
I don't wanna be me anymore
My old man told me

Manchester Orchestra, out of the ATL, has been putting out interesting and endearing music for around ten years now, exploring a variety of styles along the way. Their new single "The Gold" is excellent and captures all that they do best with thoughtful songwriting and beautiful arrangement. Looks like they're on tour and coming to Austin soon, and that's exciting. I saw them way back, opening for Brand New in Seattle, and the memory of them rocking "Where Have You Been?" is one of my live show favs.

COIN - Don't Cry, 2020

| Kerri

We were summer late bloomers
Fumbling through our teen age
We used to talk about the future
Remember when you couldn't wait?

I can't take you serious, I'm serious
It's your party and you're still in bed, you won't get dressed
I can't take you serious, are you serious

Don't cry
Don't cry
Alright
Oh, it's all gonna be alright

Years go by whether you want them to

Last year I posted "Run" and mentioned I wasn't in love with their new (at the time) single "Talk Too Much". Well, it grew on me, but there were so many even better gems on the full album when it came out this year. Like this one! We haven't got our tickets yet, but I'm getting excited for ACL this fall, and weekend two has this band, been on my list for a couple years now.

M83 - Steve McQueen

| Kerri

I just can't recognize myself
Tears of joy run all over my face
My sensations reach the limit
Nothing can hurt me today

There's a magic inside
Just waiting to burst out
The world is a goldmine
That will melt tomorrow

Living for, living for a thrill
Just waiting, just waiting!

Taking a little break from all the new/rare stuff we've posted lately. 2011's Hurry Up, We're Dreaming gave me two of my favorite songs. One of them is probably everyone's favorite M83 song ("Midnight City") so I'm making the lesser-played "Steve McQueen" today's Most Important. Alternate title (not really): "Carpe Diem!"
