Against Me! - 333

| Keith
Feeling like I need to fall down some stairs
Maybe lay face down in the river and float
Perfect weather for a head wound
Or studying sophisticated nuances of putting holes in your lungs
150 million years, war and the bomb
All reasons to be fearful but every noon, wake up
333, say that they knew me
333, bring it all back to me
All the devils that you don't know
Can all come along for the ride
I wanna be as close as I can get to you
All the devils that you don't know
Can all come along for the ride
I wanna be as close as I can get to you

I’m an Against Me! fan. Love the sound, love the lyrics, love the story. So when I first heard “333”, I listened to it all the way through and immediately went back for another listen. And another. And another.

It’s super cool to listen to a good band get better, and this is one of those situations. Laura Jane Grace is talented and terrific. If you don’t know her story, Google it, it’s interesting and awesome. Anyway, blah, blah, blah, yakity schmakity “333” is a special song.

Or, maybe, It’s so right up my alley I just fucking love it.

Kristin Kontrol - Show Me

When it all becomes unbearably heavy
I will show you, I will show you
When it all becomes unbearably light
I will show you, I will show you
Love

I'm back with another departure project! This time from Kristin Kontrol, AKA Dee Dee from Dum Dum Girls, AKA Kristin Welchez.

I would have loved this song when I was 15. There is something about that guitar and horny keyboard combo that screams KJET (the radio station I listened to when I was growing up in Seattle). Add in some expert production and cheesy yet-fairly-well-sung lyrics and you've got the makings of a new wave slow dance hit. Only it's 30 years later so we'll just call it a fun and nostalgic most important song.

FOXTRAX - Underwater

I can’t tell the time
When I’m working on my grind sometimes
And my worries are waving with the wind
And I don’t mind if I feel blue
If I’m staring at the moon
And the stars are staring at me with a grin

I first heard this song last week when it was featured on Alt Nation's Advanced Placement program, and made a note to re-listen. Then I saw that Underwater was also featured on iTunes in the #1 spot for New Artists. Come to find out this is the debut single from the first EP by a basically brand new (formed in 2015) band. Somehow these just-graduated-from-college-and-moved-to-L.A. dudes are already attracting huge buzz: FOXTRAX even got written up in a UK blog saying, "They are guilty of producing an extremely fun live performance... tighter than a hipster's jeans." So. Guess I'll be looking for them to pop up in Austin sometime soon.

Bastille - Laura Palmer (RAC remix)

Summer evening breezes blue
Drawing voices deep from you
Lead by a beating heart
What's the air and what's the night
What terrifying final sights
Put out your beating heart

Happy Bastille Day, France and happy birthday to Dan Smith, lead singer/songwriter for Bastille!! The band has a new single out you may have heard by now, Good Grief, but I chose this track for TMIS because the lyrics really drew me in, 3+ years ago when almost no one in the U.S. had heard of Bastille, and then I found out it was about Twin Peaks, and then they came out with this chilled out remix by a fairly small time producer/musician, RAC, whom I was already a fan of. So, hope this suits your mid-week, mid-summer, non-U.S.-holiday mood this evening as well as it does mine.

Chvrches feat. Haley Williams - Bury It

| Kerri
Cover up, cover up
Cover up that you're ruthless
Nobody, nobody
Nobody's ever gonna notice
And I am catching up
And I am seeing red
How about I prove I'm right
And raise it overhead?

I wanted to keep on dancing this weekend, and keep on theme-ish. It's nearly impossible to tell the difference between Lauren's voice and Hayley's, and nothing remotely associated with rap, but I'm in charge here (sorta) so I'm saying it counts! This version of the song came out just a couple weeks ago, though the non-Hayley version was on Chvrches 2015 album Every Eye Open, and the danciest track from that album is probably "Clearest Blue." Check out the video below to see Lauren wearing some plated armor, and a bit of a dance party at the end.
