Depeche Mode - Little 15

| Kerri
Little fifteen
Why take the smooth with the rough
When things run smooth
It's already more than enough
She knows your mind
Is not yet in league
With the rest of the world
And its little intrigues
Do you understand
Do you know what she means
As time goes by
And when you've seen what she's seen
you will

Usually for TMIS, I try not to post the most popular of the classic alt tunes because we've all heard them thousands of times already. And with DM there are scores of not-singles or B-sides, and of course remixes that I love, making the unconventional choice still a smorgasborg. (But my other unwritten rule is to not post 8-minute-plus songs, so that cut it back down to size, ha!) Anyhow, I went with a track off of Music for the Masses, the 6th album and many critics fave, but a slow, steady, sweat song that I first heard when I was about 13... Ahhhh, Dave's voice back then! And now I have 15 & 13 year olds of my own, which is awesome and bittersweet. (And if this seems like a downer track for late July, buckle-up because I've been deep diving Joy Division lately...)

RIYL: You don't need me to do this for Depeche Mode, do you? But here's one anyway: Bastille

Declan McKenna - Why Do You Feel So Down

| Kerri
So don't lie to me
I know I'm not as cool as I try to be
But why do you feel so down?
Again, I know I'm not a very good friend
Why do you feel so down?
Sure, that's not something I'd stick around for
Why do you feel so down?
Oh God, I know you think I'm safe and sound, I'm not
Why do you feel so down?

Declan finally released his full LP! This is the ninth track and I read it's one of the first he wrote/recorded. He's rather apologetic about it, claiming he was "a confused baby" when starting on the album and referring to this as "an almost pisstake dance tune" so I guess expect less of this mood going forward ha! But I think the sentiments here fit with all the rest we've heard from him so far - and he should cut himself a little slack, as I'm impressed with the thoughtfulness of his lyrics (speaking of all his songs collectively) and certainly don't mind if I can dance to them.

Upsahl - Can You Hear Me Now

| Kerri
Manipulate me
Your elevator's up and down
Try to shape me
My feet are too high off the ground
I try to run from the sound

I instantly loved this layered pop swirl of moody sunshine from Taylor Upsahl - it may end up being my fav track of the summer. I won't be surprised at all if this young Phoenix indie darling gets snatched up by a major label and starts collabing with the Chainsmokers or whomever. Not that she needs them - or anyone - to help make her sound so... interesting, fun, moving. Spotify currently has her identity split between her full name and her more recent use of last-name-only, so if you like this, be sure to look up her previous albums as well.

Luna Bay - Hometown

| Keith
Well, if I go, would you stay,
And remember me as I was?
And when you're calling through the night,
I'll come running to your hometown

If you're looking for a nice, upbeat, feel good, summer hit to get you dancing around your living room (or your backyard, or your chair) look no further than "Hometown" the latest single from London-based indie-pop outfit Luna Bay. They've got a fairly classic pop sound, complete with jangly guitars, smooth, catchy vocals, and finger-snapping percussion.

Coldplay - ALIENS

| Kerri

Tell your leader
Sir or ma'am
We come in peace
We mean no harm
Somewhere out there
In the unknown
All the E.T.'s are phoning home
Watching my life
On the skyline
Crossing your eyes
For a lifetime

Just an alien
Moving target
Target movement
A patch, a corner
Of the spacetime
Just an alien
Turning toward it
Turning pages
Over Asia
Crossing ages
Just an alien
Oh, we just want to get home again

I'm not a HUGE Coldplay fan, though they have some songs that I will probably listen to forever and ever - "Viva la Vida" is one of my favorite storytelling songs, and "Sky Full of Stars" hits my heart right in the sweet spot - but I figured to go with the fresh new release for today's Most Important song. Chris Martin & Co. have always been experimenters and in recent years have found their greatest success in remixes and collaborations that can be played on the dance floor ("Hymn for the Weekend" w/Beyonce remixed by SEEB, the current "Something Just Like This" w/The Chainsmokers) so it doesn't surprise me that their latest single leans so electronic straight from the gate. Kinda weird, kinda pretty, kinda fun, though also sad. Bonus: animated lyric video.
