Meat Wave - Run You Out

| Keith
I'll just run you out
Gonna run you out

Surf's up and Chicago's Meat Wave is ready to crash. Ok, that was corny, their music is not. It's smart, tight, diverse rock and roll that's full of killer hooks and unique arrangement. Their latest album The Incessant just dropped and I've been really enjoying it. Reminds me, both in tone and feeling, of The Cribs' early stuff, particularly the awesome Men's Needs, Women's Needs, Whatever which, now that I think about it, I need to get on vinyl. I digress, and you should check this out.

Circa Waves - T-Shirt Weather

| Kerri

She left me and said
Baby won't you come to bed
But I can not sleep
While the sun's awake

The nights been so long
You don't get me right, don't get me wrong
Now my head tells the tales
I hardly know

I remember T-shirt weather
I remember some days
We were singing our lungs out
in the backseat together
And the seatbelts were burning our fingers
In the T-shirt weather
I remember sleeping till the early afternoon

Drinks fly like birds
Across the kitchen trouble stirs
And I'm tongue-tied by words
I used to know

So we talk till we're sick
17 went far too quick
And when my mind plays tricks
I have to go

Late February, for most of the US (and other northern countries), is a time of deep longing for t-shirt weather, as winter stretches on. Unfair of us Austinites, then, to brag about our mild-to-warm weather in the least but especially right now as we are enjoying late summer in Melbourne. Weeee!! (I'm rubbing it in now, sorry again.) The latest track from Liverpool's Circa Waves is less on the nose, but will still make you feel warm from angrily rocking out. ("Fire That Burns" was released a month ago, the second single from their second album, Different Creatures.)

RIYL: Smallpools, Catfish and the Bottlemen, Atlas Genius, Bear Hands

Modern Me - Run Away

| Kerri
Will you run away with me?
We could go anywhere
Run away with me
No way for them to find us
We need to get out, get out, of this picture of a city
'Cause the colors never change here
Only the people I keep looking at

Today's Most Important Song was chosen for it's chorus - because tonight Keith & I are boarding a plane to (finally) take us to Australia (together)! Modern Me's sound is reminiscent of so much that is great about indie music right now, yet it combines to be fairly unique, I think. For instance: the first few seconds of this track sound a bit like the opening to "Giant" but then the music goes in a direction much more like something The Neighborhood or The 1975 would do, and then the vocals are akin to Cold War Kids-meets-Warpaint (or, fine, maybe the male-female combo is more like Grouplove). Anyway, their first single ("Waters", released last fall) is finally getting the play it deserves (on their local San Diego radio station), so hopefully this second single means the full EP and a tour are coming soon.

Rubblebucket - Not Cut out for This

| Kerri
Your memory runs and I freeze
I sift through a cloud that will erase me
I got no heart, I got no soul
I'm only a shell to put your hands on

Rubblebucket is a unique conglomeration of instruments and influences coming together and spewing forth decidedly indie pop-rock from their base in Brooklyn. Badass not just because they can make modern, dance-y, alt rock with trombone, sax, and flute accompaniment, but also because the lead singer went through ovarian cancer treatment while they were on tour in 2014. (I bet that's where that year's album title, Survival Sounds, comes from). If U C My Enemies is the band's fifth EP (there have also been 3 full albulms).

RIYL: Brazilian Girls, Vampire Weekend, Saint Motel, Ra Ra Riot

Japanese Breakfast - Everybody Wants to Love You

| Kerri

Can I get your number?
Can I get you into bed?
When we wake up in the morning
Will you give me lots of head?

Everybody wants to love you
Everybody wants to love you!

Will you lend me your toothbrush?
Will you make me breakfast in bed?
Ask me to get married
And then make me breakfast again!

Everybody wants to love you
Everybody wants to love you!

Lovely lo-fi synth pop solo project from Michelle Zauner (of indie rock band Little Big League though this is now much bigger), Japanese Breakfast's latest album, Psychopomp, is full of quick bites like "Everybody Wants to Love You", as well as soaring longer pieces that bookend the track list. Hope you enjoy the lyrics to this one through your post-Valentine hangover.

RIYL: Mitski, Frankie Cosmos, Diet Cig, Hinds
