DMA's - Melbourne

| Kerri

And I will give you what you need
Reveal the violence from the start
To know there's time for me to be
The space for when you fall apart

In all the memories you divide
There drifts an inner outer line
So I can give you what you need

And I won't feel no
And I won't feel no
Pain

Happy Australia Day!! (Of course, it's mostly passed for them, by the time this posts, but shhh, we're American, it's the 26th to us.) The DMA's are a fairly popular Sydney-based indie band (the 2016 album this song comes from went to #8 on Australian charts). Anyway, Keith had actual joeys in his office today to celebrate so I figured our blog had better mark the occasion as well. I'm suuuper excited to visit Melbourne and Sydney in just a few short weeks!

Communist Daughter - Roll a Stone

| Keith
Before we start
I started to roll a stone
To break your heart
And make heartbreak your home

I don't know much about Communist Daughter. They're named after a Neutral Milk Hotel song. They're a folksy indie rock band in the vein of what I call "band geek" bands like Cloud Cult and Anathallo. I've been listening to them quite a bit the last week or so and think they're pretty great.

RIYL: Cloud Cult, Anathallo, The Dear Hunter, American Wrestlers, mewithoutYou

The Heydaze - Hurt Like Hell

| Kerri
First bite in a long time
Reading last weeks news
Hit snooze for the third time
No sleep when I sleep without you
When I sleep without you

The Heydaze only have this one widely released single, but they've been around NYC for a couple of years already and are now touring the U.S. They've even booked at least one festival. I really know nothing else about them, except that I like this song, and it's made it onto Alt Nation's top 16 recently, so I figure you'll like it to, whoever you are.

LVL UP - Hidden Driver

| Keith
She broke right through the mess he made
Shoved an apple in his face
And impaled him with a long and gnarly stake
And I give thanks for it everyday
But I still think of god in the same way:
As the moment in my dreams
When I'm fading away
And what takes my place
Is a radial gradient of cops and priests
And mounting things
Fucking everything
Making rules for a body within me

The first time I heard New York garage outfit LVL UP I was reminded of the first time I heard Built To Spill. I mean the old, kind of rough-but-awesome stuff, not the more polished (still awesome) less-old stuff. "Hidden Driver" is the kind of song, like Built To Spill's "Car" that catches you a bit unaware each time you hear it, exciting you as it worms its way in through your ears. Their latest release, Return To Love, is an intelligent, complicated fuzzy, lo-fi treat. Check it out.

From Indian Lakes - The Monster

| Kerri

I'm beginning to wake myself up
I've been dreaming of monsters in love
Now I can't get out the taste of blood
I'm beginning to wake myself up

I was a normal kid no one could see I had a monster growing in me
I always kept it down. I was always good enough
I was a body pretending to love

We've returned from Mexico to rain here in Austin (and I realize, wah, it's likely snowy/slushy/far colder wherever you are) so let's continue the moody, mellow, seasonally-affected indie rock today with solo creator and emo revivalist Joey Vannucchi (aka From Indian Lakes).

RIYL: The Deer Hunter, American Football, Lydia
